Upgrade to Apollo Bay Harbour car park and other contracts awarded at Ordinary Council meeting

An upgrade of the Apollo Bay Harbour car park will begin after Colac Otway Shire Council voted to award a contract for the improvements works at last night’s March Ordinary Council meeting.

The contract for the car park upgrade included a full seal with kerb and channel for the existing gravel space, used for boat trailer parking and to access the boat ramp at the south-east of the port.

Council was successful in obtaining funding of $689,547 through the Boating Safety and Facility Program for the project.

Mayor Jason Schram said Council had worked with the Apollo Bay Harbour User Group on the design of the parking area and the upgrade would be a significant improvement to the accessibility for boat owners.

“Council worked with the Apollo Bay Harbour User Group on three options for upgrades to the car park. Essentially the plans covered the same footprint, so feedback was sought on where the parking spaces would go for the easiest and safest access for boat users.

“This is a great project that will improve the look of the area and will make the port a much better facility for users and visitors,” he said.

Councillors also voted to award a contract for the supply and installation of pits and pipes for drainage works in Wye River and Separation Creek.

Mayor Jason Schram said damage caused by the 2015 bushfires exposed deficiencies in the existing storm water infrastructure.

“Following the bushfires, Council developed a stormwater management plan to address the issues of erosion control and slope stability with the supply and installation of pits and pipes an important component of the work,” he said.

A contract was also awarded to enable remediation work to be carried out on eight bridges in Colac Otway Shire as part of Council’s annual capital works program.

Council also voted to award three-year contracts for both the supply of external plant hire and the supply of crushed rock.

Contracts for external plant hire to assist Council’s fleet in completing road construction and maintenance works, and also the supply of crushed rock were awarded as a panel contract arrangement which enables Council to utilise the goods and services from a number of approved suppliers.
