Amy’s Gran Fondo to take place in Colac Otway Shire in 2018

Councillors agreed at a closed session Council meeting on 24 January to support Amy’s Gran Fondo event being held in Colac Otway Shire in 2018.

Mayor Joe McCracken said Council were mindful of the arrangements the Amy Gillet Foundation would have in place for the 2018 cycling event.

“As we’re already at the end of January, we understand event organisers would be well-advanced with their logistical and sponsorship arrangements for the 2018 Amy’s Gran Fondo in September,” Cr McCracken said.

Council also resolved that the Colac Otway Shire would express an absence of support for the Gran Fondo event in 2019 and 2020.

Based on community feedback on the negative impact on business and the community, Cr McCracken said Council had resolved to express an absence of support for Amy’s Gran Fondo in the Colac Otway Shire in 2019 and 2020, but were committed to working with the Amy Gillet Foundation in support of the 2018 event.

“Council are extremely keen to work with Amy’s Gran Fondo organisers to provide an event which meets expectations of event participants, visitors and the Apollo Bay community,’ Cr McCracken said.

Colac Otway Shire Council has made repeated reviews of Amy’s Gran Fondo cycling event. A survey of Colac Otway businesses and community after the 2017 Amy’s Gran Fondo highlighted significant dissatisfaction with the impacts and benefits of the event.
