Preparing for a Storm

Severe storms can happen anywhere, at any time. They often bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, flash flooding, hail, and lightning posing serious risks to both people and property.

Call the SES on 132 500 for flood and storm emergencies.

Each year, VIC SES responds to approximately 20,000 storm-related incidents, accounting for around 80% of all requests for assistance. Common causes of damage include:

  • Loose items such as outdoor furniture, trampolines, and roof tiles becoming airborne in strong winds
  • Flooding due to blocked drains
  • Vehicles damaged by falling tree branches
  • Overhanging trees causing structural damage

Storms are unpredictable, and it’s difficult to know exactly where or how they will strike. However, many storm-related incidents can be prevented with early preparation. Taking simple steps now can help protect your home, your family, and your community.

Plan Ahead

Consider what you would do if you needed to evacuate. Make a plan for your household and workplace and share it with others. Being prepared helps keep everyone safe.

What You Can Do Before a Storm

Secure your property: Safely store or tie down outdoor furniture, umbrellas, and play equipment.

Protect your vehicle: Park under cover and away from trees.

Clear gutters and drains: Ensure water can flow freely to reduce the risk of flooding.

Prepare for isolation: Have essential supplies ready for at least 3–5 days, including food, water, medications, and pet needs.

Expect service disruptions: Power, water, sewerage, and gas may be affected.

Stay informed: Monitor weather updates via the Bureau of Meteorology and emergency warnings through the VicEmergency app, website, or hotline (1800 226 226).

Drive with caution: Avoid travel during severe weather. Watch for fallen trees, powerlines, and low visibility.
