New Street or Place Names
Colac Otway Shire Council, in partnership with JSAC Developments, are proposing to name new roads in The Nook estate after Colac-born women who served in the Australian Women's Army Service during WW2 to highlight their contribution to the Australian Defence Force.
The proposed road names are as follows:
- May Street
Named for Stella May Gleed (nee Wilson) who served in the Australian Women's Army Service as a cook from 1942 until 1945. May Wilson was born in Colac and educated at Barongarook.
-
Ethel Street
Named for Ethel Isobel Stevens (nee Gaylard) who served in the Australian Women's Army Services in the medical division from 1943 until 1946. Ethel was born in Colac and attended Colac High School.
In accordance with the naming rules for places in Victoria 2022, we are required to seek consent from the families of each person being commemorated, we have been unable to contact the families of Stella May Gleed (nee Wilson) and Ethel Isobel Stevens (nee Gaylard) and are looking for contact details.
If you are a member of these families or know someone who is, please contact the Coordinator Revenue Services by Monday 22 June 2026.
