Tourism Directional Signage

Tourism businesses can apply for directional signage to help visitors find their location.

Eligible businesses may include:

  • Accommodation providers
  • Cafes and restaurants
  • Tourist attractions
  • Service stations

What you need to know

  • Tourism directional signs let visitors know that they're travelling in the right direction.
  • Businesses that apply for tourism directional signs are responsible for the cost of purchasing, installing, maintaining, and removing signs that direct people to their business.
  • Colac Otway Shire Council manages applications for tourism directional signs located on Council-managed land or where Council is the coordinating road authority.
  • We welcome applications from tourism businesses and will work with you to get safe and compliant signs installed.

Footpath Signs and Trading Permits

Local businesses can apply for a permit to place A-frame signs on footpaths, Council road reserves and some other Council-managed land to promote their business, products or services.

You can also apply to:

  • Display a promotional tear-drop flag outside your business
  • Display goods outside your premises
  • Use street furniture such as tables, chairs, and umbrellas

What you need to know

Our Local Laws team assesses permit applications to make sure they comply with our Local Law No 1, Council policies, and the objectives and intended effect of the Local Law. 

Permits for using Council-managed space for advertising or displaying goods have their own conditions.

Council does not assess applications for the use of Crown land, which is managed by the State Government.

Before applying, please read the conditions and review the site plan requirements outlined in the permit application form. 

Street furniture permits expire on 31 October each year.

Planning requirements for business signage

If you want to install a new sign or change an existing sign for your business, you may need a planning permit.
 

What you need to know
