Local farmers to benefit from saleyards improvements

A refresh of the selling ring at Colac Regional Saleyards has kicked off a series of improvements to the Colac Otway Shire Council facility.
Council’s maintenance staff have completed a project to revitalise the selling ring, including rust removal, painting, replacement of grandstand timbers, and new safety rails, ceiling fans, auction stand and stairs.
Infrastructure and Environment General Manager Doug McNeill said the upgrade would ensure the selling ring remained safe and comfortable for years to come.
“We’re proud that this work was completed in-house by our dedicated Council team. It’s a great example of delivering high-quality outcomes while ensuring value for money for our community,” Mr McNeill said.
“The refurbished selling ring is safer, more functional, and visually appealing. These upgrades not only extend the life of the facility but also enhance the experience for everyone who uses it.”
Council is planning more investments at the Colac Regional Saleyards this financial year, including a multi-level loading race for the saleyards, which will allow for more efficient loading of cattle and reduce slip and injury risks to the animals.
Other improvements will include renewal of the administration building, installation of new forcing yards at loading ramps, and an extension of the truck turning area for the loading of animals.
“The Colac saleyards are vital to our farming community – they’re where local producers come to buy, sell and keep the region’s ag industry moving,” Mr McNeill said.
“These upgrades make the yards safer, easier to use and better for everyone involved,” he said.
“Colac Otway Shire Council is proud to support local farmers – they’re a big part of what makes our region strong.”
