Council has been working with the Irrewillipe Recreation Reserve Community Asset Committee (CAC) and the Western Eagles Football Netball Club following the Irrewillipe Recreation Reserve being considered unsuitable for competition for the start of the football netball season.

Council CEO Andrew Tenni said a number of factors had contributed to the unsuitable condition of the oval’s playing surface.

“The usual preparation of the oval was disrupted in the lead up to the season due to the use of the reserve as a fire response staging area during the January bushfires.

“The condition of the oval surface was further impacted with the drier than normal start to the year.

“With the situation created by the fires, the Western Eagles’ major annual fundraiser, being the Hoot n Nanny B&S, also didn’t go ahead, which was another reason for us to help support the works on the oval,” Mr Tenni said.

“Council appreciates the work the CAC does and is happy to provide assistance in this instance to get the oval playing surface back to game-ready condition as soon as possible, which is the goal of all stakeholders involved.

“The scale of work needing to be undertaken is reasonable and we are mindful of getting the works underway as soon as we can to get the Western Eagles’ season up and running at home.”

The oval preparation works will begin in the next couple of weeks. It’s hoped the oval will be ready for use approximately four weeks after seeding (subject to favourable weather conditions).

Council is supporting the Western Eagles Football and Netball Club with access to other facilities for training and games while works take place.
