Colac Otway Shire Council has invested $270,000 in infrastructure upgrades at the Colac Regional Saleyards, improving safety, efficiency and accessibility for livestock transport operators.
The works include installation of double-decker loading ramps, and four new single loading ramps, an extension of the loading area road surface to provide a turning area for B-double trucks and new non-slip matting in livestock pens. Recent improvements have included upgrades to the auction selling ring.
Colac Otway Shire Mayor Jason Schram said the upgrades would deliver long-term benefits for saleyard users and the broader agricultural sector.
"The Colac Regional Saleyards are a critical asset for our farming community. These improvements will make the facility safer, more efficient and better equipped to meet the needs of modern livestock transport operators," Cr Schram said.
"The upgrades also strengthen and hopefully grow the saleyards' ability to attract business from across the region to Colac to support the long-term sustainability of one of Colac Otway's most important agricultural facilities."
The Colac Regional Saleyards play an important role in supporting local farmers, livestock agents, transport operators and associated agricultural businesses.
Recent closures of regional Saleyards facilities, including Geelong, increases the importance of Colac Regional Saleyards as a key selling facility in the region.
“Council’s investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting one of the region’s most important industries and the role of the Saleyards in it,” Cr Schram said.
Future projects planned for the facility include upgraded lighting and the renovation of bathroom amenities.
