While the first official telephone call was made on 22 January 1936, it was in March 1936, that Mr. J.A Lyons, Prime Minister at the time, officially declared the service open.

The occasion was marked by a dinner in Hobart.

At the time this was only the second coaxial telephone cable in the world, and the longest and most modern of its kind.
The submarine cable linked Victoria at Apollo Bay with Stanley in Tasmania via King Island.
Over the years many technicians worked at the Cable Station and lived in Apollo Bay. Many more spent time there to gain experience in long-line carrier frequency systems.

Visit the Apollo Bay Museum to learn more of the story of the laying of the cable.
