On Wednesday October 21 Birregurra is in for a treat, with a special concert curated by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival featuring Australian quartet Raleigh Williams and the Bokanic Dyer Trio from South Africa. It is rare to hear live jazz outside of the city, and to have an international group makes it extra special.

Having a concert was the idea of Ian Court. You may know Ian from his work with many Birregurra groups - the Community Group, Lions, Landcare, Sustainability and the Men’s Shed.

You may have just seen him mowing the park or walking his beloved dog Rex. (Check out Jeremy Cameron’s YouTube Golf Hits at Birre for a look…)

Ian had many passions - motorbikes, pushbikes, politics, surfing, sailing, whisky, food, Birregurra, but above all music.

And above all, Jazz.

When Ian was diagnosed with brain cancer in May, we already knew there would be something other than the normal wake. After some quick discussions with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, a concert was agreed upon.
With the support of the Hall Committee, Community Group and The Grocer, all proceeds will go to assist other families having to cope with this disease, so this is his farewell and his thank-you to our wonderful community.
