Council is encouraging primary school students and their families to take part in Walk to School Day on Friday 17 May with Walk to School events happening for schools in Colac all through next week (Monday 19 to Friday 23 May).

This is a great opportunity to get in some physical activity – helping children (and carers!) to feel good, be ready to learn and have fun.

Local Laws Ranger Stef Riches said Walk to School Day is also an important opportunity for parents and carers to support their children to learn how to cross a road safely.

“If children are using an unsupervised school crossing, it’s important that they stop, look, listen and think, and only cross when it’s safe to do so.”

“If children are using a supervised school crossing, they need to follow the instructions of the crossing supervisor.”

Under the State Government’s road safety laws, even if there is no crossing supervisor, drivers and riders must stop if a child or adult is crossing, or about to cross, a school crossing.

Council is pleased to be supporting with local schools and Colac Police to prioritise safety for children using active travel to get to and from school this week.
