Apollo Bay and Marengo locals can share their Barham River flood knowledge with Colac Otway Shire Council to help build a safer future.

Council is working on a detailed flood study of the Barham catchment, including Anderson Creek and other relevant tributaries.

In partnership with the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, the project will help Council and emergency services like the SES plan for future floods, ensure any future development takes flooding into account, and make updates to the Planning Scheme where appropriate.

Cumulus Engineering Pty Ltd is working on the study.

Residents and stakeholders can share their thoughts at a community drop-in session at the Apollo Bay Bowls Club on Saturday 4 October, between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

They can also share their thoughts by using an online mapping portal before 17 October.

Community and Economy General Manager Ian Seuren said the project would help plan for future floods to better protect properties and lives.

“We want to keep people, homes and businesses safe by understanding how floods behave and planning how to respond to them,” Mr Seuren said.

“Better flood mapping means better emergency planning and better town planning, helping protect lives and reduce damage when floods happen,” he said.

Mr Seuren encouraged locals to share their knowledge about past floods in the area.

“Colac Otway homeowners and residents know the area best. Your experience with past floods can help us build a clearer, more accurate picture.

“If you’ve seen flooding in action, or have photos or stories, please share them. Every detail helps improve the study.”

There will be a second round of consultation when a draft flood study has been prepared.
