Colac Otway Shire Council is inviting feedback on a new study exploring the concept and feasibility of a shared walking and cycling path around Lake Colac.

Community members have long proposed a shared pathway around the lake for walking, cycling, tourism and more.

Council engaged Michael Smith and Associates to study the feasibility of a 2.5-metre-wide path and look at the potential barriers and costs of the project.

The report explores options for a full 30.5-kilometre loop around the lake, as well as a western route linking Colac to Rossmoyne Park and Cororooke. It found the western side of the lake would be the most feasible location for a path.

The study found that the project would need to consider a range of issues, including land access, ownership, erosion and embankments, cultural heritage and environmental protection.

Community members have six weeks to provide feedback on the report.

Council's Community Spaces Manager Stephen Parker said any future development of a path on the shores of Lake Colac would need to occur in stages, and would rely on government funding.

“We know the idea of a path around the lake has been around for a long time, and this report gives us a clearer picture of the opportunities and the issues,” Mr Parker said.

“A full path would come with significant costs for land and construction, but it could also present opportunities for recreation and tourism.

“We have previously engaged with landowners, relevant government agencies and key stakeholders such as the Lake Colac Advisory Committee. We’re now wanting to hear what the broader community thinks.”

The study is available to read on Council’s website.

Printed copies are available at Council offices and the Colac and Apollo Bay libraries. Submissions are open until Friday 5 December. Submitters can also register to speak at a council submissions hearing.
