For local businesses, particularly those in tourism, hospitality and accommodation, the project has the potential to remove a significant barrier to growth. Reliance on individual septic systems has historically limited expansion opportunities and created challenges as visitor numbers increase. A modern sewerage network will provide greater capacity and certainty for businesses looking to invest, expand or redevelop.
The project will also improve public health, environmental outcomes and township amenity by addressing risks associated with ageing septic systems. These improvements will help maintain Forrest's reputation as a high-quality destination for visitors, supporting the local tourism economy and enhancing the experience for residents and guests alike.
Importantly, Council's Economic Development Framework 2026-2036 identifies a wastewater system as a key enabling infrastructure project for Forrest. Access to modern sewerage services is critical for attracting new investment, supporting future commercial development and creating opportunities for employment and economic growth.
While detailed design is expected to begin in 2027, with construction currently anticipated during the 2028-33 pricing period, the endorsement of the business case represents a significant milestone after many years of advocacy by the community, Council and Barwon Water.
As Forrest continues to grow as a regional tourism and lifestyle destination, this investment in essential infrastructure will help create the conditions needed for sustainable business growth, increased investment and a more prosperous future for the township.
