Footpath Investment to Strengthen Connections in Birregurra

A major new footpath project in Birregurra is set to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity, with $250,000 allocated through Council's Footpath Upgrade Program in the 2026-2027 Budget.
Council has identified approximately 795 metres of new footpath along Strachan Street, between Bowden Street and Skene Street as a priority project for delivery in the coming financial year.
The footpath will provide an important connection along one of Birregurra's key roads, linking residential areas north and south of the township with the town centre, community facilities and Birregurra Primary School.
The project responds to longstanding advocacy from the Birregurra community, which has consistently highlighted the need for improved footpath connectivity.
The proposal was identified as a priority project in the Birregurra Structure Plan adopted by Council in 2025 and was also supported through submissions received during development of the 2026-27 Council budget.
CEO Andrew Tenni said the investment recognised the importance of continuing to improve walking connections across Colac Otway Shire.
"Over recent years, Council has invested significantly in improving footpath connections in Colac and Apollo Bay. This recommendation recognises the importance of also investing in our small towns," he said.
"Projects like this are about much more than building footpaths. They help people move around their community more easily, stay active, travel safely, and access the places and services that are an important part of everyday life,” Mr Tenni said.
