Economic Snapshot September 2026
Published on 29 September 2026
Spending in Colac Otway reached $40.6 million in September 2026, up $1.5 million (3.8%) from $39.1 million in September 2025. Spending was approximately 8.6% higher than the $37.4 million recorded in September 2024.
Nationally, the consumer price index (CPI) rose 4.0% in the year to August 2026, reflecting continued cost-of-living pressures. Local spending figures are not adjusted for inflation, so higher spending does not necessarily mean more goods and services were purchased.

Resident spending outside the region
Residents spend approximately $18.4 million outside Colac Otway each month, including in Geelong and Waurn Ponds. This spending includes fashion and clothing, specialist retail, professional services, dining and entertainment.
Weekly and seasonal spending patterns
Over the past 12 months, Fridays consistently recorded the highest spending, followed by Saturdays. Sundays typically recorded the lowest spending.
The highest daily spending over the past year was $2.73 million on 23 December 2025. Spending was also strong in the days before Christmas and through the New Year period.
