Council gathering feedback on Barongarook property

Council officers have met with residents and groups associated with the Barongarook Hall and tennis courts to get their input as Council considers the future of the site.
Following advice from representatives of the Barongarook Hall and Tennis Community Asset Committee in April 2023 that the Committee was no longer operational and the committee members weren’t interested in continuing, it was necessary for the committee to be formally revoked by Council.
At a Council Meeting in May 2023, the future of the CAC was discussed to formally revoke it. At that time it was noted that Council was open to any renewed community interest in participating on a community asset committee to manage the facility.
This provided the invitation for the broader community to get involved and reinvigorate the management and future of the hall. Since then there hasn’t been any further contact made with Council to flag any ongoing interest from the community in running the hall.
Public toilets have been maintained by Council at the site, which adjoins the Old Beechy Rail Trail.
CEO Andrew Tenni said community consultation would help inform the future of the site.
“Our officers hosted a session on Wednesday to hear what locals have to say about its future use. About a dozen people attended to share their ideas and we will take that back to Council as we consider what the future of the site will be,” Mr Tenni said.
“Whilst there were some ideas shared on what the ongoing uses of the hall could be, there was still an underlying theme that there wasn’t any interest in the community management and operation of the facility.
“Other groups and interested parties have also contacted us with their ideas for the future of the hall and we appreciate that because it helps inform ongoing discussions,” he said.
“We will keep the community informed as we work through determining the future of the facility.”
