Colac Regional Saleyards sold 3,144 cattle at its annual weaner sale on Wednesday, making it the biggest single day sale in over 15 years.

Council’s Economy and Business Enterprises Manager James Myatt said the sale was a great success, attracting local and interstate buyers.

“Council worked with local livestock agencies to combine two sales in order to attract major interstate buyers and boost prices for local farmers,” Mr Myatt said.

“We’re extremely pleased with the number of cattle sold which is a great result for our local agriculture industry and the region.

“Whilst usually the facility’s roof provides summer sun protection, this year it sheltered cattle, buyers and agents from the rain, letting the sale proceed without a hitch.

“The Saleyard provides an important service for industry, jobs and the local economy so it was fantastic to see such a positive result from the first sale of the year, particularly after the difficulties experienced by our community these last couple of years with COVID.”
