Work to continue around Lake Colac

Colac Otway Shire Council will continue to improve the area around Lake Colac with the removal of pine trees near the Colac Rowing Club next week.

The removal of the pine trees is part of the revegetation program in the Lake Foreshore Masterplan; the trees will be replaced with low growing indigenous colourful plants.

Mayor Jason Schram said the removal of the trees would further tidy up the area around the lake.

“The removal of the trees will continue the work Council have been doing to improve the area around the lake, it will also improve views toward the lake from the Botanic Gardens and tea rooms there,” he said.

“We’ll be re-planting the area with low growing indigenous plants which are colourful and will attract more bird life.

“The pine trees being removed weren’t in great condition, so their removal will also improve the safety for pedestrians, users of the rowing club and the community in general.

“By continuing to tidy up the area around the lake, we hope even more people in the community will come down to enjoy the area. With reeds removed and sandy beach on the lake foreshore, it’s a great place to bring the family on a nice day,” Cr Schram said.

Two pine trees in the Botanic Gardens are also being replaced due to their being in poor health; this is part of the tree maintenance and lifecycle management of trees within the gardens and has been approved by Heritage Victoria.
