“If you don't know where you are going, any road can take you there” ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Textile and fibre art exhibition CrossXpollinatioN will invite people on an exploration of their non-visual senses in an immersive art experience called Sensorium at COPACC.
Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and created by South West TAFE Colac’s Diploma and Certificate III visual art students, Sensorium will take participants a whimsical journey down the rabbit hole!
South West TAFE’s Art and Design Teacher Sue Ferrari said the experience would explore a non- traditional approach to engaging with artworks, taking away the sense of sight which is the most stimulated sense in a traditional exhibition experience.
“Using this as a means to challenge how we engage and interpret art, questioning can our non-visual senses change the way we ‘see’ art and how can this impact our appreciation and interpretation of the visual art experience,” Ms Ferrari said.
“Created using a variety of textile materials and techniques, Sensorium will generate a diverse range of experiences as a means to stimulate the non-visual senses, triggering both memory and imagination.”
The experience of the ‘Sensorium’ is an exclusive one: you enter the Sensorium alone or with only one other person, using your non–visual senses to explore the different elements of the exhibition.
South West TAFE’s visual arts students will also oversee two other projects during CrossXpollinatioN – a community class at COPACC on July 18, and a ‘thread art’ community participation project that will evolve throughout the duration of the exhibition.
CrossXpollinatioN is proudly presented by COPACC and the Red Rock Regional Theatre and Gallery, and is sponsored by Tarndie, Irrewarra Sourdough and Star Printing.
CrossXpollinatioN is open at COPACC from July 7 to 29, and at RRTAG from June 30 to July 29.
