Net installed to reduce rubbish pollution in Lake Colac

Colac Otway Shire Council has installed a new style of gross pollutant trap to help prevent waste flowing from Colac's streets through the stormwater system and into Lake Colac.

Colac Otway Environment Manager Stewart Anderson said the Eco Sol Net Tech 900 was one of eight gross pollutant traps in Colac Otway Shire but the first of its kind, with Council keen to monitor its effectiveness in reducing the amount of rubbish reaching the lake.

"We have six pollutant traps in Colac and two in Apollo Bay but the new GPT at the lake end of Stoddart Street is unique because all of the others are underground and the net trap is visible so we can check it anytime.

"The stormwater outlet is 900 millimetres in diameter and the catchment area across Colac for the outlet is about 370,000 square metres.

"The net can hold a total of 1.7 cubic metres of waste and our Service and Operations Team is very keen to monitor the new GPT and track the amount of waste collected at the site,” Mr Anderson said.

"The Stoddart Street GPT will be emptied at scheduled intervals depending rain events and the quantity of waste.”
