Colac’s Lions Club picnic facilities will be relocated to the Sculpture Park along the Barongarook Creek, with initial landscaping work to start in early December.

Colac Otway Shire Assets & Project Delivery Manager Maddy Bisits said the picnic area would be fantastic place for locals and visitors and the project was a great outcome, following the necessary removal of barbecues and picnic tables during the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority’s replacement of the Barongarook Creek Bridge.

Ms Bisits said the relocation works were funded by the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority with a contribution from Colac Otway Shire for associated enhancement works and project management.

“The relocation has also been made possible thanks to the support of Eastern Marr and the Colac Lions Club,” she said.

“The project includes the re-establishment of the three Lions Club picnic shelters, barbecue and picnic settings,” he said.

“The new space will include replacement of a section of the asphalt walking path with a wider concrete shared path and native plantings, bike racks and rubbish bins.

“The new space will be a great rest point along the Barongarook Creek walking path, an appealing barbecue area for the community, and an attraction for visitors to Colac.

“The new location is further from the noise of the main road and takes advantage of creek views, while still close to public toilets and car parking.

“Council has appointed a landscape contractor to undertake the works, which are expected to commence on 7 December 2020.

“The works will continue until Christmas Eve and recommence after the Christmas break on 11 January 2021. The project is expected to be completed in mid-February 2021, subject to favourable weather conditions,” Ms Bisits said.

“There will be some disruption to pedestrian access in this location during the works and alternative routes will be provided. Council thanks the community for their understanding while these important works are undertaken.”
