Bluewater gymnasium upgrade goes ahead behind closed doors

The COVID-19 situation has forced the closure of Colac’s Bluewater leisure centre but when it reopens, members will discover some exciting changes.

Colac Otway Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said upgrade work and the introduction of 23 pieces of new gym equipment was planned before the COVID-19 crisis and scheduled to happen soon, but a partial closure of the gym had been planned to enable the work to take place.

“Council decided that it was important to continue with the work while the gym is closed in response to government advice to close all gymnasiums and recreational facilities to reduce the spread of coronavirus,” Cr Schram said.

“When gymnasiums do reopen after the COVID-19 crisis, our Bluewater project will be complete and members can look forward to the latest equipment.

“Council had started planning for the upgrade after Bluewater’s consultation with members and the community and we asked what improvements they wanted at Bluewater’s gym space.

“As a result of community feedback, we are introducing new gym equipment including an Olympic lifting platform, stair masters, an additional power rack and the replacement of some outdated machines.

“The project has also included some necessary maintenance to the floor of the weights section of the gym to reinforce the floor to support heavy weight lifting exercises and other new equipment, along with repainting to add a splash of colour.

“The new look 24-seven gymnasium will be something to look forward to when the COVID-19 situation improves and State Government allows facilities to open again.

“Until it reopens, memberships have been suspended to ensure our customers are not being charged while the closure is in place,” he said.

“These are very challenging, uncertain times for everyone in our community and it’s important that we have been able to continue with initiatives that will benefit our community in the long-term.”
