Colac Otway Shire Council New Citizenship Ceremonies
Colac Otway Shire Council currently holds three (3) citizenship ceremonies throughout 2021:
- Australia Day, Tuesday 26 January
- Colac Otway Shire Council will a new citizenship ceremony on the Thursday 17 June.
- National Australian Citizenship Day, Friday 17 September
(Please note: The Department of Home Affairs will notify a new citizen in the first instance, of their date of ceremony NOT the Colac Otway Shire).
It generally takes between 3 to 6 months from the time a new citizenship application is approved to receiving an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony.
It is Council's responsibility to host the ceremonies and we enjoy helping you celebrate becoming a new Australian citizen.
The final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people, is to make the Australian Citizenship Pledge at an Australian citizenship ceremony. Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to attend your ceremony.
Citizenship ceremonies are special events. They fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law. They also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community.
For further information on becoming an Australian citizen, please visit the Department of Home Affairs - Australian Government website www.homeaffairs.gov.au
To enable our Local and Federal representatives to welcome new citizens, the dates of the ceremonies have been selected by taking into account the sitting days of the Local and Federal parliaments.
The length of the ceremony is normally between 30-40 minutes, depending on the number of candidates. Candidates are required to arrive at the venue prior to the commencement of the ceremony in order to register their attendance and complete their electoral enrolment forms. Special seats are reserved at the ceremony for candidates and family.
