Business as usual for Colac Otway’s kerbside recycling

Colac Otway Shire’s kerbside recycling will be collected by contractor Wheelie Waste and processed by Visy Recycling until September 2020.

Colac Otway Shire Services and Operations Manager Frank Castles said Colac Otway had ended its contract with SKM following the processor’s inability to deliver on its contract to recycle material from the shire’s kerbside collections.

“Colac Otway is one of the few Councils with SKM agreements which avoided sending its recyclable material to landfill after SKM closed its processing plants,” Mr Castles said.

“We were fortunate that our waste contractor Wheelie Waste had an existing contract with Visy and it was able to take our recycling as a temporary arrangement when SKM closed its Geelong facility.

“The arrangement saved tonnes of recycling going to landfill, which has helped the environment and reduced the financial cost on our ratepayers as it costs more to send waste to landfill.

“Throughout the recycling crisis experienced across the state, it’s been business as usual for Colac Otway kerbside recycling collections,” he said.

“It’s important that our residents continue to separate their recyclable materials correctly and consider how they can buy less packaging and reduce their waste where possible.”
