This year, for the first time, local government candidates are required to complete mandatory training to be eligible to nominate. This includes all serving or former councillors intending to nominate.

The training covers vital information you need to know about being a councillor, including understanding a conflict of interest, a code of conduct, and what support is available to help you do the role.

The online course will take around an hour to complete and ensure candidates fully understand the role of councillor and its requirements.

The course can be found at https://www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/council-governance/candidate-training

Undertaking the course, there are two key emails that participants will receive:

 - An email that advises that the participant has successfully registered to undertake the training

- Another email to advise the participant that training is complete

If a candidate has not arrived at the screen where it allows the printing of the completion certificate, then they have not completed the training.

If you are unable to access or need assistance to access the online training material, please contact Colac Otway Shire Council on 5232 9400 or email inq@colacotway.vic.gov.au

Staff at Colac Otway Shire Council are also here to assist candidates with any other questions you may have.

Under the new requirements included in the Local Government Act 2020, candidates must complete the Victorian Government’s Local Government Candidate Training course to be eligible to nominate with the Victorian Electoral Commission.
