Colac Otway Shire Council is preparing a strategy to better understand the heritage assets that people value in the shire.

The strategy will also promote community discussion about what aspects of heritage protection the council does well, and what areas the council could improve on.

Mayor Stephen Hart encouraged people interested in heritage issues to attend a community drop-in session at COPACC this Thursday 20 September between 2pm and 5pm.

Cr Hart said an online survey was another avenue for people to have their say, and could be accessed at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ColacOtwayHeritage

“Unlike the Heritage Overlay which involved a planning scheme amendment, the heritage strategy looks at heritage issues from a much broader perspective,” he said.

“This strategy will also ensure we meet our obligations to Heritage Victoria, which provides funding for a heritage advisor.”

Cr Hart said Council welcomed innovative ideas about heritage preservation.

“We want ideas about how Council can better support people who manage heritage assets and how we can better identify heritage sites,” he said.

“This study will look at a wide range of heritage assets and issues which include built infrastructure, cultural and archaeological heritage and even natural heritage, such as our Botanic Gardens.”
