Rural Access is a program which supports communities to plan and develop ways of including people of all abilities in local community life.

| The Rural Access officer works with local groups and organisations, businesses and the broader community to strengthen the communitys capacity to provide support to people of all abilities and their families.
The Rural Access worker does this by: Helping people and organisations work together more effectively. Improving community understanding about the needs and aspirations of people of all abilities through community education and awareness raising. Supporting service providers to assist people live the life they choose. Ensuring the needs of all people are considered when community planning. Developing easy ways for people to access information about services, community activities and issues. Developing and implementing projects which respond to needs and community priorities.
The Rural Access worker has a responsibility to plan and develop initiatives across the full range of community areas including: Access to the built environment. Education and employment. Accommodation and housing. Health and wellbeing. Transport. Sports and recreation. Tourism.
Rural Access is funded by the Department of Human Services and is implemented in partnership with Colac Otway Shire Council.
