Bushfire Update
9.00 am - 26 December 2015
Colac Otway Shire Council has opened an Emergency Relief Centre at the Apollo Bay P12 College (34 Costin St, Apollo Bay) for people displaced by the bushfire which has impacted communities in Wye River, Separation Creek and Kennett River.
Separation Creek, Wye River and Kennet River were all evacuated early yesterday afternoon to a COS Emergency Relief Centre in Apollo Bay.  Council staff are working closely with the Emergency Response agencies to help obtain any information or extra resources they require.  The ERC was activated at the request of the Incident Controller.
Emergency Relief Centres offer temporary shelter for people without a place to stay during an emergency. Wherever possible, people should stay with family and friends so long as it is safe to do so.  In addition to providing temporary shelter, relief centres provide basic support services and information for people who have been directly impacted by the fire.  The ERC will remain open and staffed by Council as long as it is required over the coming days.
A Community Meeting is being held at the Emergency Relief Centre in Apollo Bay today at 2:00pm to enable people who have been displaced to hear directly from the fire agencies about the current situation.
Colac Otway Shire Mayor, Cr Frank Buchanan said today “right now there is an emergency unfolding in our region so I would encourage everyone to work together as a community to help each other get through this.  Remember, we still have an active fire in the landscape and it’s really important that people continue to follow the advice of the emergency agencies while the emergency is unfolding.” he said.
