| The society’s History Centre is located at COPACC in Gellibrand Street, Colac and opens from 2pm to 4pm on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, when a volunteer member will be available to help people.
The society offers:
Research Material: Includes a collection of books and booklets relating to the local area; over 2000 indexed photographs; a large collection of maps - both parish plans and sale advertisements; extensive indexed files of local ephemera and memorabilia relating to organizations, people, places and events in local social life; a manuscript collection with records of institutions and businesses. There are hard copies of past local papers and microfilms of the Colac Herald from 1883 as well as short runs of some other district papers. The rate books of the Shire of Colac are also available on microfilm.
A small fee is charged for access to most of this material. Photocopying is available, but there are no microfilm printing facilities. Members will also carry out research on request.
Historical objects: The society has a large collection of items relating to Colac’s past and these are displayed in regularly changed exhibitions. A gold coin is charged for entry to these.
Books: A range of local publications are available for sale, including those researched and published by the society.
Visits: The society hosts visits from schools and other groups, from within the community and outside Colac. Adequate notice must be given for arrangements to be made.
Contributions of information, photographs, memorabilia and items relating to the history of the district are welcome.
Meetings are held monthly. New members and visitors welcome.
Membership per year: Single $15. Double $25. This entitles members to use the collection, receive a bi-monthly newsletter, and be covered by insurance while in the History Centre.
