Bluewater Fitness Pool
Colac Otway Shire have prepared and adopted a Sustainable Water Use Plan. This plan identifies actions that will reduce water consumption for all council assets including sporting fields, parks and gardens, Council offices, saleyards and the Blue Water Fitness Centre.

As managers of large areas of open space and community facilities, our council is in a position to play an important role in conserving water. Colac Otway Shire has the capacity to lead by example and demonstrate to the community and industry a proactive approach to water management. By developing a Sustainable Water Use Plan to manage its own assets in a sustainable manner council can provide leadership and actively promote water conservation in the wider community.

The adoption of the Sustainable Water Use Plan will also allow council to identify areas of priority for water management in their jurisdiction. Councils who have undertaken a water conservation planning process will also be looked upon favourably for State Government water funding in the future.

The actions listed in our Plan will ensure that our council is in a position to actively reduce water consumption within the Shire.

For more information contact the Shire's Environment Department on 03 5232 9400.

Water Management Action Plan (WaterMAP)
As Part of the State Governments Permanent Water Saving Plan - Our Water Our Future released in 2004, all non-residential water uses who consume over 10 million litres of water must produce a Water Management Action Plan (WaterMAP).

Colac Otway Shire has three sites that use over 10 million litres of water. These sites include the Saleyards, Botanic Gardens and Central Reserve. Colac Otway Shire has completed WaterMAPs for each of these sites.

These Plans are being implemented and we must annually report to Barwon Water on the implementation of their waterMAP and water savings and review the Plans at the request of Barwon Water.

The Plans provide for:

A reduction in water and sewer discharge costs for the three sites
A reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions
Potential funding assistance to investigate and implement water efficiency measures
An improved understanding of water usage at the three sites
Behavioural changes of staff and other water users that will lead to further water conservation
Helping to ensure that water is available for future generations
