| Council goes blue for men’s health
Colac Otway Shire’s councillors and staff donned all things blue today to raise awareness of men’s health.
Blue September is a nationwide awareness and fundraising initiative about all the cancers that affect men – prostate, testicular, bowel, lung, liver and other cancers.
Councillor Frank Buchanan initiated Colac Otway’s involvement in Blue September, and said it was important that the organisation showed leadership and supported important causes.
“Men are under-represented in the senior years, they die considerably younger than women and there seems to be no genetic reason for this, so you would have to assume the reasons go to the very core of how and why Blue September came to be,” Cr Buchanan said.
“Men don't seem to make the transition from middle age to elderly as well as women.
“I suspect that men still consider themselves bullet proof, and continue to put off that lifestyle change that is needed for a longer and healthy life.
“There is also the aspect of not seeking help or advice, not talking to their family or mates, and Blue September encourages men to be more open about their health.”
Cr Buchanan said Council’s participation in Blue September was a small token of how the organisation felt about men’s health issues.
“Colac Otway Shire Council participates in many health awareness initiatives, including Pink Ribbon day for breast cancer, diabetes, Beyond Blue, and we are gearing up to support the upcoming Ride to Work day.”
