Impounded Cats & Dogs

 Animal Infringements

What happens to stray dogs & cats?
Dogs and cats found wandering in the Shire may be impounded by Council. If identification can be established owners will be notified. That's why registration tags and microchips are so important!.

Animals that cannot be identified are taken to the pound, which is located at 33 Rossmoyne Road, Colac West.

If you have lost your animal or you find an animal, you can contact the Local Laws department where animal details are recorded on a lost and found register. This register provides details about the location of the animal and may facilitate a reunion of the animal and their owner.

If your animal is impounded a release fee also applies. If the animal is currently registrered, the release fee is $50 for the first day and every extra day $10 is charged. If your animal is unregistered the same fees apply plus cost of registration.

Fines may apply when Council picks up stray animals. Owners of wandering animals can be fined up to $239.00.

Animals are kept for eight days, after the eight days ownership of that animal is automatically transferred to the Shire. Council can then either rehouse the animal if suitable or dispose of the animal.

If you would like to adopt a pet view our "Adopt-a-Pet" page and fill out your request.
