Colac Otway Shire provides a domestic garbage collection system called the "Green Scheme".

The Green Scheme was implemented in 1998 and provides a service to designated properties within the Shire.

The Green Scheme is an innovative system that separates waste into organic, inert and recyclable streams at the household.

There are significant environmental benefits with the Green Scheme; the cost of transport is also reduced.
