| Council continues push for container deposit scheme
Colac Otway Shire Council has continued its push for a national container deposit scheme.
Council, in consultation with Barwon Regional Waste Management Group, has made a submission to a parliamentary committee investigating proposed legislation for a national container deposit scheme.
Mayor Brian Crook said Council identified a range of issues in its submission for the parliamentary committee to consider when investigating the scheme.
“Council has identified various matters to consider including costs of transport and haulage, and storage facilities for rural or isolated areas,” he said.
“The committee should also consider any impact a proposed scheme would have on the waste industry to ensure local businesses are not adversely affected.”
Cr Crook said the scheme could provide an additional income source for local clubs and volunteer groups.
“If established, Council believes the waste management industry and community should be consulted to ensure collection points are strategically located and convenient for the public,” he said.
