Pre-Primary Learn to Swim  Printer Friendly

Infant Aquatics aims to familiarise children and parents with the aquatic environment and to promote water confidence through participation in a wide variety of supervised aquatic activities. This program caters for children between twelve months and school age, before introducing them to our After School Learn to Swim Program.

Benefits
The interaction of parents with their babies in the water is stimulating on many levels. Did you know babies that take part in baby swimming programmes are often thought to be happier and healthier? Research shows that early swimmers perform better on tests measuring social, academic, motor and personality developments. Water also offers heightened multi-sensory stimulation, involving touch, hearing, sight, taste and smell. And babies can exercise more muscles in the weightless environment, as they're not restricted by their incapacity to sit or stand up. But statistics aside, it's also a pleasure!

Our Swim Teachers
Our professional Learn to Swim team are all AUSTSWIM qualified. They create an encouraging learning environment, ensuring your child learns to the best of their ability. We have an extensive range of expertise in our team, delivering infant, school age, adult and disability programs.

Our in-house training schedule ensures a consistent and dynamic delivery of the programs we offer and the constant improvement of team skills.

Levels
The Pre-Primary levels are based on your child's age. 1 - 2 year olds are generally classed as 'Pippies', 2 - 3 year olds as 'Guppies', 3 - 4 year olds as 'Jellies' and 4 - 5 year olds as 'Starfish'. Parents are required to be in the water with their child until 'Starfish'. If your child is entering the program at 4 - 5 years of age, the Learn to Swim Supervisor will assess their ability to be in a class independently, before placing them in a 'Starfish' class.

Student/Teacher Ratios
Level   Ratio
Pippies, Guppies, Jellies   1:6 (1 teacher to 6 students)
Starfish   1:4

Lesson Times
The Pre-Primary LTS Program operates 5 days per week, between 9.00am and 11.30am, Monday to Friday. These hours coincide with Crèche operational hours.

Lesson Duration & Course Fees
Lessons are 30 minutes in duration and are conducted on a Term basis. As a guide, there are normally 10 weeks per term. Course costs average $110 per term, per child, with concessions for families of 3 or more children and pension/concession card holders. (Please note BWFC does not accept Health Care Cards as concession).

Term dates can be viewed at the Learn to Swim Home Page

Enrolment
Enrolment periods vary according to whether your child is current (continuing their program from the previous term) or new. For current students, we call the enrolment process Re-enrolment; for new students, New Enrolment.

RE-ENROLMENT
Before offering our LTS Program to all customers, we provide an exclusive period where only current students can enrol. This aims to ensure a degree of continuity for students from term to term. Re-enrolment Week is the last week of each term, from open of business on Monday, to close of business the following Sunday. During Re-enrolment Week, a minimum deposit of $25 is paid to confirm the enrolment. Please understand that we do not take tentative bookings. The balance of course fees are settled at the first lesson.

NEW ENROLMENT
The weeks after Re-enrolment week are referred to as Enrolment Week. Enrolment Week begins when BWFC opens for business, on the first Monday of the school holidays. For the Pre-Primary Program, it remains open until the end of the term. Late enrolees simply pay pro-rata as opposed to full course fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring to class?

Towels, one for yourself and two for your child; toys, favourite bath toys that are familiar to the child; & warm clothes to wear after swimming.

What do I wear in the water?

We recommend the parent wear bathers, board-shorts and a t-shirt or rash vest. This give your child something to hold onto and serves to keep you warm. The pool is heated to around 30 degrees celsius, but the added layers will keep you warmer in winter, especially when you're not submerged or actively moving. For children, aqua-nappies are compulsory. You can purchase either disposable or re-usable nappies. BWFC stocks 'Little Swimmers' - disposable aqua nappies in small, medium and large.

What if my child is getting cold during the lesson?

Initially it may take time for young children to adjust to spending 30 minutes in the pool environment. If your child is displaying signs of lost body temperature, they should be immediately removed from the water, dried, kept warm and clothed.

What if my child is sick?

It is recommended that children do not attend aquatic classes when they are ill, are running a temperature or have an ear infection. There are no refunds or credits for missed lessons, however Family Swim Passes (worth $15.00) will be issues in lieu of missed lessons where a medical certificate is presented. To apply for a Family Swim Pass, download a Missed Lesson Form from the LTS Home Page, complete and submit to the Aquatics Co-ordinator.

Will the chlorine in the water affect my child?

Chlorine is used for sterilisation of the water. The chlorination system we use is sodium hypochlorite, which is a highly effective yet mild disinfection system. Reactions to this type of chlorine are extremely rare, even for infants. Following each class, children should be showered before leaving the Centre to wash the chemicals from their skin and warm their core body temperature.

What if my child vomits in the water?

Water intoxication is very rare if your child has achieved aquatic readiness. Your child will be taught to hold their breath (under 1 year) or blow bubbles (over 1 year) to decrease the amount of water ingested. Submersion is not the focus of the class and your child will not have the opportunity to ingest enough water to vomit.

Can we eat before the class?

Try to avoid eating or drinking directly before any aquatic activity. This may cause your child to develop cramps and become sick. However, your child should be hungry when in the water.

Can we swim before the class?

It is recommended that infants do not swim before their designated class time, to encourage optimum concentration levels during the class. Children learn much better in short learning experiences.

Can I request a certain instructor?

We cannot guarantee instructors as we set the program 4 weeks in advance of commencement and staff availability can change. We consistently train and monitor all of our staff and we pride ourselves on a consistent yet dynamic delivery of our program.

What do I do if I have any feedback or an enquiry?

Please direct your enquiries/feedback to our LTS Supervisor or the Aquatic Co-ordinator. You may also complete a Customer Feedback Form, available at Customer Service or the LTS Home Page.
