Apollo Bay is experiencing considerable growth in tourism and residential development. Currently, it has a population of 1,200 which swells to 15,000 over the peak holiday season. Apollo Bay’s harbour is one of only three safe blue water havens in Victoria west of Port Phillip Bay.

| Apollo Bay Harbour Precinct Master Plan | | Colac Otway Shire Council has adopted a concept plan for the redevelopment of the Apollo Bay Harbour. The Master Plan outlines potential development and improvement opportunities for the Apollo Bay Harbour precinct, including integrating the harbour and the town with new shared pathways and improved access with increased parking.
The vision for the Apollo Bay Harbour Precinct Master Plan is “The Apollo Bay Harbour Precinct will be a new focal point for the town and surrounding region and a ‘must see’ destination on the Great Ocean Road.”
The underlying principle of the Master Planning process has been that Apollo Bay must capitalise on its unique location and develop in a way that will set it apart from other towns along the Great Ocean Road, especially maintaining its distinctive seaside fishing village character and the port as a working harbour, enhancing the natural environment and maximising community benefit.
The Master Plan demonstrates maximum capacity for development over the next 20 years. The final implementation will reflect community input, commercial feasibility, engineering and marine engineering studies, archaeological studies, environmental impact and other feasibility issues.
The Master Plan will provide a basis on which Council can consider proposals for this unique and vital area and provide valid grounds upon which inappropriate development can be considered and refused to ensure the Apollo Bay Harbour is developed in an appropriate way into the future.
It is anticipated that the various elements of the Master Plan will be implemented over time through a combination of public contribution and private investment in accordance with market demand and community expectation.

| A New Marina | | A $1.6M upgrade of the marina at Apollo Bay Harbour is complete.
The new marina at Apollo Bay Harbour is safer and will accommodate an increased demand for berths in Apollo Bay. The new structure has replaced the 30 year old fixed timber marina.
This new facility will cater for boats up to 18m length, and will benefit commercial and recreational boat mooring conditions at the harbour.
The project, jointly funded by the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Regional Development Victoria, included the demolition of the existing timber marina and the installation of a new marina consisting of floating pontoons, access ramps and fixed platforms.
Upgrade works are consistent with the Port of Apollo Bay Harbour Future Capacity Study 2006.
The marina has been designed in accordance with Australian Standard Guidelines, and takes into consideration the local environmental conditions.
Prior to finalising the design extensive research was undertaken by Council to determine the best possible marine system for the conditions at Apollo Bay Harbour.
Technical features of the marina include;
• A 10 year warranty for pontoons, connections, mooring fittings and piles against breakage, structural distress, cracking etc.
• The pontoon material is resistant to ultraviolet light, salt water, petrochemicals, marine organisms and fire.
• The deck is finished with an anti-slip surface for alleviating risks of injuries suffered due to slipping.
• Energy efficient lighting of appropriate intensity for navigation, security and pedestrian movement.
