Fire Safety  Printer Friendly

Victoria is one of the highest fire prone areas in the world, with the Otways, Plains Country and South Western Victorian Grasslands having a long and established history of devastating wild fires.

In addition, populated townships see regular fires in industrial and commercial buildings and house fires affecting local families occurring on an all too regular basis.

Awareness of how and why fires occur and cause the damage they do, is vital in preparing our community to prevent, respond to and recover from the fires that effect us all.

Fire Management
Colac Otway Shire realises that reducing the risk of fire requires a community effort in partnership with Council and Fire Authorities. The Shire's fire prevention is managed in accordance with Council's Municipal Fire Prevention Plan.

Everyone should prepare for summer by removing fire hazards from their homes and workplaces with preparation taking place well before the summer fire danger period. In this regard at-risk properties will receive courtesy letters informing them of their obligations leading into the fire danger period.

Prior to the fire danger period Council Officer's inspect private land in the Shire and may serve landowners with Notices to remove fire hazards where required. Heavy penalties apply for non-compliance.

The Country Fire Authority also has a Bushfire Information Line at 1800 240 667 which should be used when the latest information is being sought for wildfires across the state.

Fire is a natural part of the Australian landscape and from time to time the DES and Parks Victoria will conduct burning off operations that may create smoke in and around the public land being managed. For details of DSE burns follow the link to their website dse.vic.gov.au
