The Road Management Act requires that a road authority, such as the Colac Otway Shire, keep a Municipal Road Register showing the roads for which it is the Coordinating Road Authority.
Council and other authorities responsible for roads within the municipality, (e.g. VicRoads) will have separate registers. The Colac Otway Shire’s Register details only those roads for which Council has responsibilities.
Generally, a person searching Council’s Municipal Road Register can establish if a particular road is included and thereby conclude that Council is the initial point of contact for road related enquiries.
Roads in the Colac Otway Shire that Council is not responsible for, typically include main roads and tracks through Crown Land. These are managed by other road authorities such as VicRoads, and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE).
