Lake Colac Foreshore Master Plan is set to begin

A planned transformation of the Lake Colac foreshore has received a boost with Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh and Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson pledging $250,000 to the project.

Together with $250,000 from Colac Otway Shire Council, the $500,000 project will allow stage one of the Lake Colac Foreshore Masterplan to commence.

Mayor Joe McCracken said Council was excited to progress a project which had been identified as important to the Colac Otway community.

“The project is a direct result of the development of the Lake Colac Foreshore Master Plan completed in 2016, which included an extensive community engagement process. In addition to the formal consultation in 2016, the community has continuously indicated the value people place on the lake foreshore, along with a strong need to see it become a major attraction for locals and visitors alike,” he said.

“The works to be undertaken aim to improve the look and accessibility of the area.

“Improvements to Lake Colac will attract visitors inland and provide them with another experience to enjoy whilst visiting the region. This shows a commitment from both Council and government in investing in opportunities for sustainable employment across the Colac Otway region which will continue to develop over time,” Cr McCracken said.

The funding will assist with the implementation of the following works:

  • Installation of new park furniture including picnic tables, seating and shelters
  • Installation of safety lighting in the carpark near the boat ramp and along the foreshore pathway near the Botanical Gardens
  • Installation of a new shared pathway along Queens Avenue
  • Replacement of the existing gravel carpark near the Rowing Club with a sealed carpark
  • Replacement of the existing pine footbridge over Barongarook Creek near the Chapel Street bridge

The Federal Government funded the development of the Lake Colac Master Plan that sets out a 10 year program of improvements to the Lake Colac foreshore.

The Federal Government’s $250,000 contribution came under the Regional Jobs and Investment Fund.
