Community members to help steer Lake Colac’s future

Three community representatives were formally appointed to help steer the future of Lake Colac on Wednesday at the April Ordinary Council meeting, but an open invitation remains for more people to get involved.

Up to six community representatives can sit on the Lake Colac Coordinating Committee – an advisory committee to Colac Otway Shire Council.

At the April Ordinary Council meeting, Councillors endorsed the reappointments of John Martin and Rodney Amos to the committee, along with new member Jan Grieg.

The community representatives make up part of the committee, which consists of over 20 people and also includes community group representatives, Councillors, Council officers and agency representatives.

Colac Otway Shire Deputy Mayor Jason Schram congratulated the three community members who nominated for the three year term and were subsequently endorsed.

“Although we only had three applications, they are all skilled and experienced and will contribute effectively to the work being undertaken by the committee over the next three years,” he said.

Cr Schram said due to the remaining vacancies, Councillors had also agreed to delegate the CEO authority to appoint other community members who make applications to join the committee during the three year term.

“The committee’s terms of reference note that if there are less than four community members appointed, that new applications made throughout the term can be considered,” he said.

“I’d encourage anyone who is passionate about the lake and its future to consider applying to join our three existing community members.

Cr Schram said it was important to note there were eight other community stakeholder group representatives on the committee.

“With the three community representatives endorsed yesterday, there are 11 community members on the committee so even if no other applicants come forward, there are sufficient members to ensure fantastic and robust representation on the committee,” he said.

Anyone interested in applying to join the Lake Colac Coordinating Committee is encouraged to call Colac Otway Shire Council on 5232 9400 or visit the shire offices in Rae Street.
