Colac’s Memorial Square playground upgrade

A planned upgrade of Colac’s Memorial Square playground is set to commence with the State Government pledging $250,000 toward a new regional playspace.

Western Victoria MP Gayle Tierney made the funding announcement during a visit to Colac today saying Memorial Square was the real heart of the region and that the State Government was pleased to support Council’s project to improve facilities.

Mayor Joe McCracken thanked Ms Tierney for announcing the funding grant saying it was a remarkable contribution on behalf of the state.

“Colac is identified by the war monument and Memorial Square; to enhance that is to enhance our community.

“A lot of people stop in Colac’s CBD to enjoy the Square, we’re pleased to be upgrading this facility to encourage young people, families and also older people with grandchildren to use the space; it’s going to create a lot more vibrancy in the area,” Cr McCracken said.

Cr McCracken said the upgrade to the playground had been developed in partnership between Council and with extensive consultation with the Colac Otway community.

“The playground is one of the most utilised facilities in Memorial Square, the upgrade will provide senior, junior and toddler play zones and a diverse range of play equipment for varying ages and abilities.

“We have received a strong message from the community for Council to improve safety at the play area and our Memorial Square Master Plan details long, curved bench seating which will wrap around the western and northern sides of the playspace to act as a physical barrier while also providing families with a place to supervise their children.

“The next step, now we have the State Government’s commitment to the project, is to go out to consultation with the community to finalise the finer details such as the specific types of equipment included in the new, larger playspace.”
