Colac Otway Shire Council is preparing to officially open the CBD Revitalisation Project in a formal ceremony following completion of the project in December 2017.

Councillor’s will be joined by funding partners Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson and

Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria Danielle Green, along with representatives from the Colac and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and local business owners.

The upgrade of Colac’s central business district was completed on schedule and in time for Christmas with works crews recently completing finishing touches to the pocket park where the official ceremony will be held at the corner of Murray and Queen streets.

Mayor Joe McCracken said Council is delighted the project was delivered on time and acknowledged that the construction period had been challenging for local retailers, and was pleased to invite them to attend the official event in recognition of their patience during the works.

“We’ve appreciated the work of our team and the many local contractors involved to deliver such a high quality project. We also want to acknowledge the way businesses and the community have worked with us through the project. This is an opportunity to formally thank them,” he said.

“Our approach of involving small local trades to complete the works allowed flexibility to manage the project in smaller sections and adjust our delivery method based on available budget and suitable timeframes. This meant better outcomes for businesses in the works area and they’ve been appreciative of this approach.

“Customers and visitors to Colac are now able to enjoy the finished product and we’re expecting the striking impact of the works to make our CBD a more attractive place to stop, shop and socialise.”

Cr McCracken said discussion with the community on the wider CBD and Entrances Project had been occurring since the planning for the project started in 2011.

“We are thankful to the community for their involvement in developing the project, and want to acknowledge the vital contributions made by our funding partners to allow us to realise our community’s vision.

“Council is really excited about the transformative effects this project has clearly had on our CBD.  It’s now a true visual reflection of what our main town and our surrounding district has to offer,” he said.

Key highlights of the project include:

  • Creation of a pocket park on part of the Telstra site delivering a beautiful entrance to the CBD

  • Complete upgrade of the centre median including exposed aggregate and installation of up lighting from Corangamite Street through to Queen Street

  • New footpaths between Corangamite Street and Queen Street

  • Smart irrigation system installation in garden beds and centre median to ensure plant and tree health all year round

  • Installation of new updated street furniture including seating, bins, bike racks etc.

The CBD revitalisation project has been funded with $975,000 from the Federal Government, $500,000 from Regional Development Victoria, $200,000 from Local Government Victoria and $275,000 from Council.
